Olympics
Is anyone watching the Olympics? It's entertaining as usual, and this year's is especially challenging given how hard Tokyo has been hit by COVID. A lot of athletes flew all the way there, only to test positive and become ineligible to compete.
Re: Olympics
The only time I watched the Olympics was during the ice skating competitions in 1994- and only because I was wondering if a fight was going to break out.

Re: Olympics
Oh that's right -- the weird Nancy Kerrigan saga
Re: Olympics
Some of the current athletes are complaining about the stress, but poor Nancy Kerrigan went through a nearly career ending physical assault, then had to perform next to the woman who orchestrated the assault, and then had to endue a public backlash.

Re: Olympics
True. But it did get you to watch the Olympics that year. No doubt it was all a ploy to attract ratings

Re: Olympics
I did kind of the same thing. I went for Nancy Kerrigan, but I stayed for Surya Bonaly.
Understandable. The Olympics failed to provide safe spaces and trigger warnings.

Re: Olympics
The Simone Biles comeback story is pretty big in this Olympics.
Re: Olympics
^And she ended up getting the bronze.
Which I'm sure her critics will make hay out of.

Re: Olympics
It seems like every story I see about the Olympics is about somebody withdrawing, or being disqualified, or protesting, or being outed as a terrorist, or seeking asylum, or complaining about uniforms being too long, or complaining about uniforms being too short, or being investigated, or whatever. Is there any actual sports going on?

Re: Olympics
Yes, plenty of sports are happening, but the media focuses on the petty human drama between events. It's mesmerizing

Re: Olympics
Now it's the Winter Olympics. It's a very strange Olympics, with the main stories centering on all the COVID precautions, lack of audience at the events, China's terrible human rights record, etc.

Re: Olympics
Strange days indeed. I'm surprised China doesn't require people to attend.
