Star Trek: Strange New Worlds -SPOILERS

Post by RJDiogenes »

We're starting to get some substantial news about Strange New Worlds, so I think it's time for a thread. :D

Here is some quite interesting news about the characters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc7ZWdJY6ZY

So, in addition to Pike, Spock, and Number One (who's real name is Una, which is kind of cute), the big news is that Uhura will be on the crew. She's a cadet, which places the show at least seven years before TOS (and about six years after "The Cage"), assuming they're really making an effort to establish this in the prime timeline. The actress looks good, certainly more like Uhura than the actress from JJ Trek. Hopefully she has the gravitas to do justice to Uhura.

Another interesting tidbit is that Dr M'Benga will be a regular character, possibly the CMO. M'Benga appeared on one or two episodes of TOS as a Vulcan specialist. If he's the CMO, we have to wonder how he got demoted in favor of McCoy.

Nurse Chapel will also be in the cast. I'm not sure what's up with that TMP-era medical uniform, but that's the least of my worries for this show.

In addition, there will be an Andorian on the crew-- and he actually looks like an Andorian, so maybe this really is the prime timeline.

The weirdest, and most worrisome, part is that there is a character named Noonian-Singh. Maybe they can pull that off somehow, but I can't imagine how it can't go wrong.

The ship sets, of course, look great. The lights are on and the visible light spectrum is in full use. I really hope they don't pull another Discovery on us, because it would be nice to have another real Star Trek show.

You beat me to the punch in posting this teaser :yuck:

Did you watch any of the episodes of Discovery with Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock? If not, you should. Everyone seems to love Anson Mount's portrayal of Pike. I've never cared for Rebecca Romjin in other roles; however, I have enjoyed her as Number One.
You can have my Oxford comma when you pry it from my cold, dead, and lifeless hands.

I'm really pumped. Anson Mount did a kickass job of portraying Pike in season two of ST:Discovery. The rest of the cast looks good, too. Let's hope for good writing. After all, it's all about the storytelling, not the CGI effects.

I think RJ gave up on Discovery after season one. The main reason, I think, is Captain Lorca, who was wayyy too dark a character to pass as a starfleet officer. But then he was revealed to come from the mirror universe, explaining everything. I've really enjoyed all three seasons of Discovery.

Yup. Jumping before THE BIG REVEAL is a killer. I've enjoyed Discovery with the understanding that it doesn't mesh with canon due to the (past) fracturing of the rights. Well, save for the way the series started, which was hot garbage. It should have started with Burnham on her way to jail and all of the events leading to that moment being seen as flashbacks.

No, I gave up on it long before that. I might watch those episodes just to see, but, really, the only way this show can work for me is if they completely ignore Discovery. I hope they can either resist the temptation to use Klingons, or just use era-appropriate Klingons without explanation.

I liked her in The Librarians. I'm not sure if I've seen her anywhere else. I do know that I've been pronouncing her name all wrong.

After about five or six episodes, actually.

Aside from just plain not liking it, the main reason was that there's no way to reconcile the show as Star Trek, let alone as part of the prime timeline.

I've heard other people say the same thing. Fascinating.

Just for kicks, you may want to watch a few episodes of season 2 of Discovery. I think you'll be impressed with Anson Mount's performance as Pike. He's a strong, ethical leader.

I'm tempted to watch them, but I can already tell that the casting is great. But I remind myself that Discovery looked great, too, until it was a disaster.

It could certainly be interesting to see a character arc for Spock bringing him from his characterization in "The Cage" to his characterization in TOS. In principle, I much prefer seeing those things fleshed out rather than ignored, even it's really a matter of the show's conceptual development. It's much more creative to work with these things rather than against them. No hookups with Uhura or Chapel, though. I don't think Leila would work either-- the timing is right, but I think it was specified that they met on Earth. Unfortunately, I do not trust the producers to respect the source material.

I'm optimistic that this series will work if only because I love Anson Mount's portrayal of Pike in ST:Discovery.

Of course, it all comes down to good screenplay writing. I they can't tell a good story, the series won't work.

Bingo. They need better writing than Discovery (and I like Discovery, but Burnham gets to be a bit tiring).

There's a rumor out there that Jolene Blalock will appear on Strange New Worlds, presumably as an elderly T'Pol (I would guess her to be approximately 165 at this point, which is a bit older than Spock was in Next Generation-- since she is a full-blooded Vulcan, I would expect that she would appear somewhat younger, though).

The other part of that rumor is that she is the mother or grandmother of Number One. I'm a bit mixed on that, as it plays fast and loose with Spock's status as the first Vulcan in Starfleet.

Also, I started a thread for Orville Season Three. There's a little bitty trailer out.
