Re: The Picture Thread III: Say Cheese!
I think the petals are there along with the pistels and stamens, but that the sepals are the part that proliferate instead of the petals.

That's so strange. I wonder what made it decide to do that. It must have some survival or reproductive value, yet most other flowers go the usual petal route.

I wonder if that's the explanation for bougainvillea. Hmmmm.... I googled it, and I'm still confused.

Heh I would have gotten a cane that color even if it didn't have the features, but since it does, YAY! It has a whole different feel to it, more stability, and with the wider end, I'm hoping it works well on the beach. I'm heading to Bed Bath & Beyond with a 20% coupon, and if they really are in stock, will pick up a black one for beach, gravel and dirt. This could open a whole new range of walks for me.Madeliaette wrote:now that is a stick i would definitely be proud to use!!

That's fantastic. It looks very futuristic and stable. You'll be able to explore those trails in the hills.

^ That's the plan. I've had a lumbar pack ready to go for years, just needed to walk better and have a suitable cane.
Clouds and an enduring rose. The second picture I snapped fractions of a second before a raptor of some kind flew through. Gone before I could shoot again, since I was doing continuous shoot.

Re: The Picture Thread III: Say Cheese!
Here are some of the pictures I took yesterday. The weather was perfect for an abandoned airfield and dilapidated buildings.
Part of the field with old housing facilities in the distance.
Another part of the field. I have no idea what that globe on the tower is. Radar? Weather station? The fence was still up on this part of the base (you can see in the lower left that I was shooting through the chain link), so I couldn't get any closer.
A crumbling building. I was going to try to get inside, but decided I didn't have time. I found a dead skunk next to the entryway.
The widest part of the airfield. You probably can't see it, but the flight tower that I want to photograph is on the other side. But....
Here is the same picture, cropped instead of resized (well, both, actually), so you can see the tower.

At least a live skunk didn't get you. Sad, dilapidated buildings. One of the problems with turning military bases back to civilian control is all the weird chemicals and shell casings and stuff like that.
Two views from my new table at Harris Ranch brunches and another one of the fountain.

I guess we were lucky with Pease Air Base in Portsmouth. It's now the Pease International Tradeport. It gets lots of use and new businesses are moving in all the time.

Re: The Picture Thread III: Say Cheese!
^^ They had big plans for Southfield that would have been really nice, but then the economy crashed and everybody went bankrupt. Now they're all suing each other.
Here are some of the pictures I took this morning:
The first one is looking toward the old flight tower. In the second two you can see the streetlights on the new road that replaced the huge dilapidated building from my original expedition. I do like the sky in the second one.
Yeah, they made a big deal about cleaning the place up, but who knows if they got everything.emma glitch wrote:At least a live skunk didn't get you. Sad, dilapidated buildings.
