Opposite Of Scars - Poem

Post by RJDiogenes »

Yet another poem that I hear as a Folksy song in my head:

THE OPPOSITE OF SCARS
© 2015 Rick Hutchins

Broken hearts and shattered dreams surround me
People weep and brag about the pain
Of the scars their lost loves have left upon them
Repeating a sad, cynical refrain

I, too, once knew the love of a woman
Eventually we went our separate ways
But she left more than she took in her departure
If a love is true, then something of it stays

Now I don’t know what you’d call these things she left me with
Guess I don’t know what they really are
But whatever these things are that she left me with
Guess you’d say they’re the opposite of scars

She took a perfect day and made it better
She made things easier that didn’t start out hard
And though I was not lacking for companionship
Still she was a presence in my heart

All the things she gave are indescribable
And in the years since we have parted they have grown
To become a force that makes me indestructible
And never have I ever felt alone

Now I don’t know what you’d call these things she left me with
Guess I don’t know what they really are
But whatever these things are that she left me with
Guess you’d say they’re the opposite of scars

Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it. It's actually going to be the title of my next collection.

That's wonderful. Will the collection all relate to the same theme?
