Re: 16700000000000

- Print more dollars? A couple of years at a fairly forgiving 5% inflation should be enough to dissolve the US national debt to manageable levels. At that rate, your savings will melt away, but you won't have to worry about whether that $100 bill will pay for a loaf of bread by the time you get to ...

Terminator had a very nice ending that neatly wrapped up nearly all the storylines. To be honest, I'd have been appalled had it been extended.

Re: A somber anniversary

Columbine was a terrible tragedy. Undiagnosed and untreated mental illness caused the death of innocent people. As far as such is possible post-mortem, the shooters were diagnosed with psychopathy and depression, respectively, the first of which is a hereditary condition, and the second of which is...

It's been a while now, but I can relate to what you've written. I've definitely been bullied, and I've been a bully as well (a particularly nasty one, I suspect, although more by virtue of a sharp tongue than by inclination). I've also been a cub scouts leader for the last nine years, and I can tell...

Re: When will the bankrupt banks be nationalized?

Those banks and investment institutions should have been qllowed to fail, just like any business. No different. The thing is, banks are not just like any business. They're companies in possession of a specific government license that makes them subject to different rules. When you and I need a loan...

Re: When will the bankrupt banks be nationalized?

You do realize that there are thousands of local and regional banks which not only weren't affected by this, are in fact stronger than ever... That it was only a very small hand full, under 9, of the "super conglomerate" nation wide banks which got caught up in this... That when the peopl...

Re: When will the bankrupt banks be nationalized?

Let them go bankrupt, and let the FDIC pay out the insurance on the deposits. It's simple and the proper choice to make in this mess. With what money? Same money they are using to bail them out... Well, just asking, since you mentioned the FDIC, which only has money to cover one percent of all depo...

Well, then you have the choice between paying for their mistakes ad infinitum, or letting them go bankrupt, taking people's savings along with them.

The original Homeworld had magnificent music. Including the only effective use of Barber's Adagio I've ever heard (normally I can't stand the piece), crazed space pirates swerving along to Sufi meditation music, and a wonderful ambient soundscape as the ship enters the Garden of Kadesh.

Re: When will the bankrupt banks be nationalized?

I'm sorry, but how do you propose to handle those things, legally speaking? Since the banks would continue to exist as distinct entities, the only way to do so would be by law or by contract, both of which would have to be absurdly complex to resist the banks' attempts to weasle out from under them....

When will the bankrupt banks be nationalized?

Governments around the world have been extremely reluctant to do that so far, preferring instead to throw good money (or at least government credit) after bad by supporting them while leaving the existing structures in place. These banks should, economically speaking, work to inject that money back ...

Re: Correcting Mistakes... Right to vote.

Wow. How insulting to all the men and women who voluntarily sacrifice their own freedoms for the sake of their neighbors. If my neighbours want to sacrifice their freedoms in the privacy of their own home, that's their own choice. But their little religion of blood and human sacrifice does not enti...

Re: Correcting Mistakes... Right to vote.

The right to vote will only be given to people who pay taxes and do not derive their income from the government. And what about the boys in the Navy, Army, Corps, and Air Force? Officers and upper cadre enlisted personnel only, of course. The rest serve in a subordinate capacity, and have elected t...

Well, congratulations. I disagree with just about everything you propose. ⋅  Kids forget the stuff they've learned quickly once they're away from school. Summer break is bad enough; adding two month-long vacations just wastes more of their time. Apart from imposing a huge burden on their p...

Michael Byron's Awakening at the inn of the Birds. It's quite slow and surreal--I think a couple of people here have mentioned liking Cliff Martinez' soundtrack to Soderbergh's Solaris--this is very similar.

Re: Correcting Mistakes... Right to vote.

One thing I do wonder about is why people are not allowed to sell their vote. The argument that it would put more power in the hands of the rich doesn't fly--considering the amount of money spent on campaigning, elections are already a rich man's game. Spending a few million buying a couple of thous...

But I meant that lately kids seem more stupid/violent/ etc etc etc. Than they used to be. I don't think they are. It's why our languages still have cutesy expressions like "Growing up for the gallows" The difference is that in the 19th century, misbehaving children were seen as the natura...
