alternative OS's

#1 Post by Santaman » April 29th, 2007, 2:21 pm

Just a quistion to the techheads here... what OS's besides the ones provided by Micro$oft have you tried so far and what are your experiences with them?

I myself have been trying various versions of Linux, I once started with Suse 9 (IIRC) on an ancient Compaq machine and lately I have tried various Ubuntu flavours,
Kubuntu is the OS that I so far like the most of them but also Xubuntu is very nice because of its ability to run on machines with limited resources and today I have installed PC BSD which runs KDE as desktop manager, its been quite easy to set up IRC (KSirc) and IM (Kopete) also web browsing is provided with Konqueror which seems to do well.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

PC BSD can be found here: http://www.pcbsd.org/
Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/
OpenSuse can be found here: http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org

I've used Redhat but that's about it. To be honest, the oher OS's just lack the support, the software, the games, drivers, etc so I haven't bothered with them in a while.

I use OS X now. I know, it's not what you meant by "alternative OSs".

^^ Its not something made by Micro$oft so it does fit the "alternative" description... ;)

I think I can get used to PC BSD or Kubuntu, they're both working well on the testmachines that I use. :)

I've used Fedora Core and Red Hat before that. Still do.

Everytime someone uses a dollar sign in Microsoft, it reminds me of Penny Arcade. This isn't the strip I'm thinking of but it's close enough. :p

I messed with RedHat in school, as I had to take two Linux courses. I have to say that I really wasn't impressed with the interface. Kinda reminded me of something that Mozilla would make (this coming from a huge Firefox fan).

I do like Apple's OS as well, but I am forever for Windows.

Right now, I use both XP and Vista. Frankly, I don't see why people have such a problem. I get stuck on new drivers now and then, but that is always an easy fix. I think the main reason is that the OS tends to differ so much from machine to machine that there seems to be no universal fix for anything. I guess maybe I'm just lucky or incredibly skilled ;)
