Sophie finished recording the details of the job with Dynamic Engines on her electronic notepad. She knew that Jessan had also seen the posting from the intent expression on his face. Without either of them speaking she knew he would want to see about integrating some of those parts into the Firestorm and she made a mental note to see if she could wrangle some of them as part of the payment for the job.

Wasting no time because she knew this would be an attractive job for quite a few mercenary or cargo runner groups, she went over to one of the communications consoles near the boards and dialled the number given on the job posting. Immediately Sophie was put through to one of the managers in charge of shipping and delivery. The conversation was fairly brief since they had most of her details on their customer list and she and her ship and crew were invited to go Kabial and land in the corporate spacedock where she could be interviewed for the job.

She had to get there within three Earth-standard days and announce her arrival early so they could book her a landing slot. Satisfied, she closed the channel and turned to Jessan. "We're off to Kabial tomorrow so I can be interviewd for the DyEn job we just read." Sophie announced happily to him. Now all she had to do was get there and seal the deal during the interview.

For her part Daxia was absolutely content and happy as she walked around with Kellen. She almost couldn't believe that Quaylar Four had changed so rapidly. The sights, sounds and smells of a city full of Mikoatty living their lives without a sense of rigid control and constant oversight from drones overhead or officers on the street was something totally opposite from the traditional way they'd grown up in.

Having a large population of humans mingling freely with them was another great thing for Daxia to see. There were quite a few betailed humans walking with their Mikoatty partner-usually the female of that pairing had the rounded belly of one who was pregnant. She finished paying for her sweetmeats and had taken a few bites when she heard sounds of a crowd and the happy squealing of a young child. Daxia turned around and saw that Akraya was flying a harnessed Mikoatty child around the square with a crowd of humans and mikoatty below.

"Hah! It does at that. What I would have given for an Ariesse to fly upon when I was a child. I always loved flight, the sky, and space. No coincidence I became a pilot." She remarked. As she spoke she wondered what a child of hers and Kellen would be like. They already had a land plot here on Quaylar, it was just about when they wanted a family and Daxia knew she wasn't quite ready to settle down yet. Her adventures with the Black Steel were far too appealing right now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It bears absolutely no resemblance to the dingy black market world I visited both as a soldier and as a freelance lone mercenary." Sylen agreed with T'sarrina as he cuddled her gently on their sofa. He smiled as he gently rubbed one tentacle over hers. Spending most of the week in their environmentally-controlled quarters watching tv, cuddling, playing games and whatnot-only going out for meals or the occasional walk around the city had done wonders for their scales. He noted with pleasure that both his and her scales were properly soft, moist and generally in better condition than they had been. "And I prefer it this way honestly, especially now there are two other worlds the Mikoatty streaming from their homeworld can spread out and settle." Sylen added, giving her a soft affectionate kiss.
T'Sarrina was absolutely content snuggling up to Sylen, and she kissed him back. "I much prefer it this way as well." She told Sylen. I feel much safer walking around the markets now than I did when there was barely any law and most of the market stalls were black market. I'm so glad Daxia and Kellen incited the Exiles to declare their independence."
***************************
Jessan brightened when Sophie told him they were going to Kabial to try for the cargo job with DyEn. "Maybe they'll let us see some of their new stuff too." He couldn't wait to see what new stuff they had and if he would be able to integrate it into Firestorm's systems.
**************************
"And you're the best pilot in this whole system." Kellen snaked his tail around her waist as they watched the child being flown around. The happy squeals coming from her were enough to tell everyone below that she wasn't the least bit afraid and he knew she would probably remember that for a long time to come.
He really liked the direction the planet had taken once the Exiles had taken control of it. It had become a place people wanted to visit and/or live on. He glanced around at all the different couples. There were Mikoatty couples, human couples and mixed couples, with both parties of some of the mixed ones sporting lovely tails. And the both of them had gotten that started. Both the revolution and the tails. Something he was very proud of.
Sophie gave the Guild job' board one last look over and recorded the details of a couple bounty hunts that would make suitable back up jobs in case they didn't land the DyEn job. "Don't worry Jessan." She began as she took his hand and began walking out of the Guild Hall. "I fully plan to see if I can wrangle some of the more juicy engine parts as part of the reward instead of it being entirely credits. We have to keep upgrading the Firestorm as much as we can."
She assured him as they stepped out onto the streets and began heading back to the spaceport. Even if her mate hadn't been an engineer she would still be looking for every opportunity to upgrade her ship. That integrating new parts to the Firestorm made Jessan happy was a lucky coincedence. They walked turned off the main street into a smaller side street that would take them toward the spaceport quicker. This street was comparatively quiet and empty-save for two large male humans wearing brown or black leathers along with an equally large Relexal male. They also carried stunners sheathed at their belt. Sophie kept an eye on them as the two groups approached each other. Then one of the humans eyed her and spoke.
"Ah, Captain Guerrin?" He greeted. "Or should I say, Captain Theirrin?" Instantly Sophie's hand found her own stunner sheathed at her waist. "How do you know that name?" She asked sucpiciously." The man chuckled. "Your family misses you and would like you to stop by for a visit." He told her. This made her eyes narrow further. "And if I didn't feel so inclined to visit?" All humour vanished from the man's face. "Then I'm afraid we'd have to insist." Sophie tensed up, glancing at Jessan as she prepared for the inevitable incoming fight.
"Then we have a problem." She remarked before whipping out her stunner and firing rapidly in the three mens' general direction as she dived behind a nearby trash can. As soon as she hit the ground she quickly pressed the small distress button she carried that would alert T'Sarrina that she was in mortal danger due to her heritage.
T'Sarrina sat bolt upright when her alarm went off and she looked at Sylen. "Sophie is in trouble. Her parents have tracked her down." This was not good, there could be people out there right now who were scouring the place for her, if they thought she was still with her. "We have to help her." There was no way she was letting her friend be taken back to those people. She picked up her alarm and checked, and then showed it to Sylen. "There in the shortcut to the spaceport."
********************
Jessan was a bit wary of the three big, leather-clad people who were in the side street when they turned onto it. He had been listening to Sophie explain that she was going to wrangle some engine parts as part of the fee so that he could upgrade again. That made him very happy. There was nothing he liked better than tinkering with Firestorm and making her better.
Then they turned the corner, and walked upon the three large males, one of whom called Sophie by her hated family name. Theirin. And they said her parents wanted her to go home, which she refused, and the resulting conversation ended with her pulling her stunner and diving behind some trash bins while firing at them to distract them. He did the same. No one was taking Sophie from him, most especially people who worked for her parents. He then raised up and took aim at the scattering thugs and fired again.
**************************
Kellen was enjoying watching the child have fun, as well as Akraya and her sister. The two bird people were really having a blast as they flew the child around. But then he frowned and looked around. "Did you hear that? Sounds like weapons fire." Then he heard it again. Definitely stunner fire. "Stunners. Over by the shortcut to the spaceport. Let's check it out."
Sophie rose into a crouch behind the trash can that she had hastily dived behind to take cover from the three leather clad men. The spray of stunner blasts had done its job and allowed both herself and Jessan to take cover. One of them had even managed to hit one of the human males because he now lay on the concrete pavement unconscious. The minor victory was short-lived because the other two men had also found cover behind the corner of a building and were still trying to stun them though most of the shots were concentrated on her.
Sophie returned fire aggressively as a mixture of fear and adrenaline pumped through her. She'd dreaded this day and hoped that it would never happen. But it had. Her parents had found her at last. She was unsurprised when more leather clad opponents of various different races appear from concealment having now sprung their ambush. They were clever and kept themselves behind cover. Some would provide covering fire for their fellows to advance bit by bit. Sophie knew if nothing changed she and Jessan were in big trouble.
Between them they'd taken down several of their opponents but they were heavily outnumbered. But then Daxia and Kellen turned the corner and she peered around the edge of the trash can to give them an appealing look for help. Daxia responded by pulling out her own stunner and started shooting the backs of the unsuspecting enemies. Several went down before they realised the new combatants had entered the battle and took cover.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sylen was startled by the bleeper and the way T'Sarrina sat up bolt upright in response to it. When she told him what was wrong he nodded and got to his feet in an instant. "Of course we'll help her." Hurriedly he donned his full envirosuit that covered his whole body similar to a hazmat suit and grabbed his assault rifle. There wasn't enough time to put creme on their scales so he opted just to wear the envirosuit. "Let's go. We'll signal the rest of the crew on the way out."

As soon as T'Sarrina was ready Sylen exited the quarters and nearly crashed into Talia who happened to be coming down the corridor. "Talia! Round up as many of the crew as possible and arm them. The Captain's in trouble. Use the ship's sensors to track our Di'Lekk lifesigns. That'll tell you where to send the backup." He ordered before running towards the airlock at a speed his mate could manage.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daxia tilted her head to one side slightly and nodded. "That's weaponsfire. Someone is in trouble, I agree let's go check it out and render aid if need be until the police get there." And with that Daxia ran towards the sounds of the stunners with Kellen at her side. As they rounded the corner and entered the side street where the fight was happening she was slightly puzzled until she saw Sophie peer around a trashcan and silently appealed for help with her expression. Daxia nodded once and moved to a position where she and Kellen could quickly move behind cover. Then she proceeded to shoot at the unsuspecting leather clad men until they wised up and took cover themselves.
T'Sarrina pulled her own envirosuit on while Sylen pulled his on, then they both almost ran over Talia as they exited their quarters and Sylen told her what was going on and had her send out an alarm to the rest of the crew.
Then she ran along with Sylen, carrying her own weapon, as well as a medical kit. She was very anxious and nervous about being caught herself, but she wasn't leaving Sophie. She knew Sylen would protect her, and that helped ease the anxiety. When the airlock opened, she ran towards the street that she knew they were being accosted at.
*****************************
Jessan was relieved when he peered around his trash can to see one of the humans unconscious on the ground, hit by of their stunners. The other two had taken cover, so they would be harder to hit. Then, just when he was starting to relax a little, more leather-clad thugs poured out of hiding places and provided covering fire for an advance, mostly aiming at Sophie, but some being aimed at him as well. They were able to take some more of the thugs out, but the rest were advancing, and just when they were going to be overrun, Daxia and Kellen showed up and caught them in a crossfire that had them scrambling for their own cover. Still, there were a lot of them and they were quite outnumbered.
But he wasn't about to give up his Sophie without a fight, especially to her no-good parents!
************************
Kellen ran along with Daxia when she agreed to check out the weapons fire, and when they turned the corner, they saw a large gang of thugs of various races from human to Relexal attacking someone who was behind trash cans. When he saw it was Sophie and Jessan, and the look on Sophie's face, he narrowed his eyes and pulled his stunner and started shooting the thugs with as much precision as Daxia was, which had them going from about to overrun his friends to scrambling for cover like rats in a thunderstorm.
He dove for his own cover when they started to compose themselves and some of them turned to return fire. Didn't matter, now they had their attention split and wouldn't be able to overrun either of them.
Akraya was alarmed to hear the sound of blaster fire in the distance, and from the look on Desuko's face, so was her sister. Right now, with a giggling and whooping toddler in her harness, she couldn't do much about it - though she did gain height briefly to guage range, covering with a swoop which elicited yet more peals of laughter from her charge.
She judged the fight to be far enough away that it wouldn't disturb the audience in the park, but then she caught Kellen and Daxia running toward it. Catching Desuko's attention with a hand signal not visible to anyone on the ground, normally used to coordinate display teams, she instructed her to investigate whilst Akraya finished the show.
Desuko cawed once in response, pinwheeled in midair and performed a spin to give the crowds one last move, then rose out of their sight.
Akraya turned the corner of the park just as her radio crackled to life; Talia quickly informed her of the situation as far as she knew it, and relayed Sylen's instruction for all available crew to converge. She increased speed for the final length of the park, landing and unharnessing the child.
A few other children rushed forward, desparate for a ride, but she was going to have to disappoint them - for now, anyway. "I have to take care of something, but next time I'll leave time to take more of you up," she promised, launching into the air before she could be ambushed. "Watch the skies!"
She wheeled out over the park and rose above the buildings, taking the shortest route to the coordinates Talia had provided.
***
Pedras heard the blaster fire and sped off even before he heard from the ship that Sophie was in trouble. He had seen Akraya and Desuko's subtle check of the area, and correlated it with the younger Ariesse's spectacular exit, realising something big was happening near the spaceport. As he arrived, he saw several Black Steel teammates in combat with leather-clad thugs; pulling the pistols he always carried out of their holsters, he opened fire.
***
Desuko stayed high out of range of the combattants below her, aware that she wasn't a fighter and that Black Steel were heavily outnumbered. She used her vantage point to keep watch, as several more Firestorm crew arrived, uncertain whether to fly for help, join the battle or keep observing.
As most of the command crew arrived, she made her choice. She was no fighter, but she was a gymnast, so she could run interference from above - providing she didn't get shot down as soon as they saw her.
Cawing loudly as one of them hit too close to Daxia, she swooped in, talons extended, raking the man's head enough to draw blood. She span away as he rolled to fire back; his blast went wide, and she dodged behind a signpost, seeking her next target.
***
Akraya had all of her various blades out and ready as she approached the battle. She saw her sister's attempt at diversion, and shot forward as he fired on her, slicing him with a wing-blade. The battle was joined.
*Tzoink*
Djo and Crimson heard something hitting the wall, it was the sound of a stunner.
"That is not a good sound." Crimson said while he suddenly saw leather clad men running.
Djo frowned and checked his gun.
"Troubles, we go, guess we'll need more ammo."
They ran out of the store and noticed that the fight was near or in the bounty board.
Upon arriving they saw a large group of men in leather being in a messy fight with crew of the Firestorm.
Crimson made speed and moved at a terrific speed for someone his size, his right arm hooked around a lamppost, the other one around the neck of the nearest leather clad man, using the sudden change in direction as a slingshot he catapulted the man into the nearest wall with an incredible speed, the man slid down the wall leaving a bloody trail on the way down.
Another man saw this but he suddenly saw an old man appear before him, he told the old guy to beat it but Djo's arm shot forwards, fingers hitting the top of the man's liver, he doubled over and his face came down which connected with Djo's knee moving upwards the result was a broken nose, several hours of unconsciousness and a severe concussion.
Both Djo and Crimson grabbed the stunners from the men, non lethal weapons were more useful in a messy fight like this.
Moving further towards the fight they spotted Kellen and Daxia, Crimson whistled and gestured that more people could come from the other side.
Sophie sighed in relief when first Daxia and Kellen showed up and joined the fight closely followed by Pedras, Djo and Crimson. The latter of which whistled and gestured that there were more still coming from the other side. She acknowledged with a higher-pitched whistle of her own and remained crouched down with Jessan taking shots when she could.
Sophie's jaw dropped open in surprise when Desuko showed up on the scene, assisting Daxia by running a diversion for her. She hadn't expected anyone not of her crew to assist other than police officers-whose sirens she began to hear as word of the disturbance reached the authorities. A few moments later Akraya joined the battle using her wing blades to team up with her sister.
She felt a bit more confident now-with the rest of her team having arrived and police sirens getting closer soon the leather-clad thugs would have to withdraw, die or be arrested. They seemed determined to keep trying for her though seeming to want to wait for the last moment before giving up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Daxia had dug in her position with Kellen, determined to protect her captain and engineer as best she could despite the uneven numbers though more of the crew arrived so fast the Mikoatty knew that Sophie or her mate must have used some kind of hidden panic button to alert the crew. She barely evaded one stunner blast that came in her direction before a loud cawing above her distracted most of the thugs closing in on hers and Kellen's position.

Daxia recognised that caw and smiled as Desuko clawed the shooter's face with her talons so when he and several others lifted their stunners to shoot the Ariesse she shot them in turn while they were distracted. Then Akraya joined them with her battle blades. The presence of two Ariesse attacking from above were providing a certain amount of doubt and hesitation to the thugs who had clearly never fought Ariesse before.

Daxia deftly picked up one of the fallen thugs' stunners with her tail and flicked it up towards Desuko. "Don't worry, its not a lethal weapon." She assured her even as she resumed fire. She could hear the wail of police sirens and knew that they wouldn't have to hold out much longer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Sylen arrived on the battlescene with T'Sarrina only a few moments after Pedras, the battle started going badly for the leather-clad thugs. The big Di'Lekk had brought his specialized stun-rifle along which allowed him to shoot stun blasts with the speed and precision of a fully automatic rifle. As such he chose his cover carefully behind a parked air-car and began shooting at the thugs, taking quite a few of them down.
The police were close now and he could see the shadows of their aircars coming up along the street ahead of them. Just then though he saw one of the thugs manage to shoot Sophie full in the chest with his stunner. Sylen knew that the weapon would simply knock her unconscious and she'd wake up in about half an hour with a mild headache. But between them, the crew ensured that the thugs couldn't reach her or Jessan as the fight began to draw to a close.
Jessan breathed easier when more and more of their crew showed up to help them fight. He was very surprised to see Desuko fly a distraction for Daxia, who in turn flipped the Ariesse a stunner to use. He could also hear the sirens of the law enforcement vehicles getting closer and closer, which made him feel much better.
But then a stunner blast caught Sophie in the chest, and she collapsed unconscious. "You bastards! You can't have her!" He then made sure Sophie was behind cover before he started blasting away at any thug who presented themselves, which wasn't difficult with the distraction that Desuko provided. He was very angry and those bastards were going to feel it.
**********************************
T'Sarrina crouched behind the aircar with Sylen while he started picking off thugs with his stunner rifle. There were so many of the crew there to help, as well as Desuko, that she simply kept an eye out for any thugs who might decide to try to flank them. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Sophie go down to a stunner blase, but Jessan quickly pulled her close to him before he started shooting again. She had felt her heart leap in her chest when she saw that, but with how close the police were, as well as most of the senior crew shooting at them, they weren't going to make off with their prize.
********************************
Kellen crouched behind cover when a slew of thugs started appearing out of nowhere. Despite being thugs, they were still formidable fighters, a cut above the typical thug. In fact, he would bet his last credit that these weren't thugs at all, but paid mercenaries disguised as thugs. When one of them got a little too close to Daxia with a stunner blast, he narrowed his eyes and was about to shoot when Desuko appeared from out of nowhere and clawed at his face, driving him back, and providing a distraction for both him and Daxia to take down some more of them when they tried to take aim at her. Daxia then flipped Desuko a stunner and they all went back to thinning the thugs.
Then he happened to catch the sight of Sophie being hit in the chest with a stunner blast and he howled in anger and shot the offending thug, sending him tumbling to the ground unconscious. He was relieved when Jessan pulled her out of sight behind cover. Those bastard would get their captain over his dead body, but the impending arrival of the police should scatter anyone still conscious. At least he hoped.
Akraya's keen eyesight saw the blast that took out the captain, and tracked it back to a thug hiding behind a stone wall for cover. She made straight for him, dropping her talons at the last possible second, impaling him in both shoulders, just as Kellen's blast hit him. Even if he was still conscious, there was no way he'd ever hold a weapon again. "That's what happens when you make Black Steel angry," she hissed, rising and turning to re-enter the fray.
***
Desuko grabbed the stunner, though with her wings beating, she wasn't entirely certain of her aim - it was hard enough to shoot straight while completely motionless. Of course, since she was just providing a distraction, she could afford to be a little inaccurate - as long as she didn't hit anyone from Black Steel. Pointing resolutely away from the crew, she opened fire, tracing a swathe of laser blasts across a wide tract of the street.
More than one of the thugs went down, though not through Desuko's deliberate action, before another group turned to fire on her - just as Pedras spotted them and let them have it with his dual pistols.
Laser beams flew past her, impacting on the tall building behind her; dodging, she figured, was about as likely to cause them to hit her as flying straight, so she kept going.
By now, Akraya had seen her sister's plight, and let out a loud cawing as she flew past perpendicular to her. A few of the thugs tried to track her, but she was too fast, her manoeuvres too erratic. Desuko took the opportunity provided by the brief respite to seek her own cover - up out of their ability to aim properly - and circled around behind them to resume her assault.
Shortly after Sophie went down and Jessan pulled her safely behind cover the police arrived. Their air-cars came in to land wherever there was room in the street and their air-van remained floating just above the buildingtops above them. At that point those few thugs that were still conscious fled-or tried to. A mixture of human and athletic Mikoatty police officers took off after them in hot pursuit. Daxia immediately holstered her stunner and stepped out of concealment with her hands spread out in a gesture of submission. "Easy there." She called out. "We're not the aggressors here." She glanced over at where Sophie lay unconscious. She was very pleased Akraya had inflicted serious injuries to the one that had shot her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"I know." The ranking police officer with extra red banding on his black and navy blue armoured uniform marking him as such. "We saw most of it on satellite recording." The big, burly Mikoatty replied to Daxia. "Who is in charge of your group?" He demanded. At this point Sylen stepped forward. "I'm the first officer. Our Captain, Sophie Guerrin is currently unconscious over there." He gestured to where Sophie lay with Jessan. "My name is Sylen." He continued. "We're the Black Steel Mercenary Company and those thugs attacked our captain. We simply came to her defence using nonlethal weaponry."

The look on the Mikoatty Officer's face indicated that he recognised the name. "Very well. Go over to your Captain with the rest of your crew and wait a few minutes while I confirm your identities and check the police satellite recordings. If what you say is true then you can go." And with that he went back over to one of the police cars to access the database, barking at his officers to start rounding up the unconscious thugs. Obediently Sylen took T'Sarrina's hand and walked over to Sophie where he and the others had been instructed to wait. Once they'd been cleared he had every intention of asking to borrow a mercenary or two for their own questioning before returning them to the Quaylar Four police.

As soon as the remaining conscious thugs tried to make a run for it, Jessan holstered his stunner and dropped down to sit next to Sophie, who he pulled into his lap and cradled gently. They would now have to tell the rest of the crew why they were trying to take her, but it didn't matter, the others would surely understand and support her even more, if he knew them as well as he did. And that included Crimson, who would probably understand more than anyone, as secretive as he was most of the time.

He was glad Sylen was there to speak for them right then too, as he wasn't moving until they were given permission. Hopefully they would let them have one or two of them to question too, since there were so many of them. They wouldn't miss two of them.

***************************

Kellen immediately holstered his stunner as soon as the other 'thugs' started trying to run away. He kept his hands where they could be seen while Daxia, and then Sylen explained that they had simply been defending their captain. When they were allowed to go sit with Jessan and Sophie he walked over and knelt down, then he waited for the others to gather before whispering to them. "These ain't no thugs or gang members, these guys are mercs. This trap was too cleverly set for it to be anything else.

He was very glad that the one who almost got Daxia had been mauled and left severely wounded. He was going to ask if they could at least have that one.

***************************

T'Sarrina stayed with Sylen, holding his hand while he explained that he was the one in charge since Sophie was unconscious. Thankfully it had just been a stunner blast and she would just wake with a slight headache. T'Sarrina knew Jessan would take good care of her while she slept it off.

As for the one who got mauled and stunned, she hoped his arms would rot off. She was that incensed about the whole thing.

Desuko had the good sense to stay quiet as the police arrived, though her mind was filled with questions - who were these people, and why were they attacking Black Steel?

She and Akraya landed, Akraya having sheathed her blades, and waited for the officers to question them. Of the entire Black Steel company, only Akraya had used anything that could have been lethal - the blades - which she quickly informed the police, and offered to surrender them as evidence. It wasn't like she didn't have spares, though she didn't tell the police that, and she hadn't used them lethally.

Desuko gave the officers full details of her involvement, from the hand signal to why she'd joined in instead of flying to get help. Only after the police officer moved away did the reality hit her - she'd just been involved in a firefight, with no weapons or armour of her own. She'd even drawn blood.

Akraya hadn't even blinked as she'd spiked the captain's assailant's shoulders, but Desuko didn't have the dubious benefit of prior combat experience. Shaking now that the adrenaline was wearing off, she nestled close to her sister, barely able to think, let alone speak.

***

Akraya's first combat experience had been against drones, and her second was against crystalline aliens. Though she was able to ignore the physical reaction to this third fight, she was still painfully aware of the wounds she'd inflicted today. Desuko nestling up to her didn't help - her sister had acquitted herself admirably, even using an unfamiliar weapon in a quite unorthodox manner, but this was her sister. She should be having fun showing off her gymnastic skills, not getting mixed up in this mess.

She made the mistake of looking over at the injured thug. If her stomach hadn't been empty, she'd have vomited; as it was, her stomach heaved, but nothing came out. She forced herself to look away, and guided Desuko to where the crew were gathering. It was time to trust the police to do their jobs.

***

Pedras holstered his blasters as the police showed up. Tempted as he was to use his superior speed to chase down the escapees, he knew this wouldn't be appreciated. Instead, he wandered over to the rest of the crew and waited with them.

"You... are... an... arse...hole... and.. you... will.. pay..!" The large man said while stomping on the face of a thug with his fist hitting the hapless merc with each word, he was interrupted by the police who wasn't too sure who was the thug and who was the crewmember of the Firestorm.

Between him and Djo there were a few more battered thugs lying on the floor, the old man grinned and showed the policemen his hands.

"Djo cook of ship, big guy kitchen help!" He said quickly.

Crimson smiled his most friendly smile and released his grip on the thug who smacked face first onto the floor.
"Hi, yes, I am the potato peeler expert on board the Firestorm." The policemen had to look up but the large man did show that he was unarmed and he didn't attempt to run nor shoot them so they stopped aiming the stunners at Crimson and called for an ambulance to take the thugs to the secure wing of the hospital.

Crimson and Djo walked up to the rest of the crew guided there by the police and waited.
Crimson loosened his neck and cracked his knuckles, he was totally ready to lay waste to anyone messing with his new friends.

Daxia chuckled when the police officers weren't quite sure whose side Crimson was on. So she helpfully added to his introduction. "Oh, yeah that's one of ours." She assured the officers as he and Djo were led over to them. She wasn't concerned about the polite at all. Quaylar Four had different laws than Earth or most of the human based worlds-indeed the laws regarding self defence and defence of another were much looser here.

As soon as Sylen finished confirming the truth they would be free to go. The 'thugs' though would face lengthy interrogations, prison sentences or exiles. Daxia was hoping however that Sylen could pull a few strings to let two of the thugs be 'borrowed' by the Black Steel crew for some private interrogation. "I was wondering about their apparent skill level." Daxia admitted to Kellen. "Something else is going on here." She added quietly. Then she noticed the two Ariesse sisters and walked over to them. She knew they had very little actual combat experience with humanoids and it was hard at first. She smiled at them sympathetically in greeting. "Are you two okay?" She asked.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It didn't take long for the burly Mikoatty Police Lieutenant to go over the satellite footage of the fight and prove that the Black Steel's story was true. He took their names, statements and recorded the incident and before look the 'thugs' had mostly been rounded up and secured. "Actually Lieutenant." Sylen said as the last handful of thugs were being collected and the one Akraya had mauled had been bandaged up by the police medic.
"I was hoping we could borrow that mauled one there and one of the unscathed one for a few hours for a little private interrogation of our own. They attacked our Captain for a reason and we'd really like to know what it was." The Lieutenant shook her head. "Sorry Commander, we don't usually allow our prisoners to be 'borrowed.'" Instantly Sylen knew he'd have to pull a little leverage to get what he wanted, and fortunately he knew exactly how.
"Fair enough. The Black Steel Mercs are on very good terms with President Aegir and Vice President James. We'll ask them as a personal favour." This made the Lieutenant pause. Few people on Quaylar Four hadn't heard of how it was the Black Steel crew that had initially started the rebellion that had led to this civilisation being formed. Sylen pressed his advantage. "T'Sarrina here is an excellent doctor. I can assure you the suspects would be returned to you in good condition."
Finally the Lieutenant nodded. "Very well. But I want them back by sundown." This time it was Sylen who nodded. "You have my word." Then he half turned to Kellen. "If you'd grab yourself a Merc please?" He asked as he walked over to the mauled one seeing as Daxia was busy talking to the Ariesse sisters.
"Yeah, I'd bet my last credit they were hired specifically to go after the captain. They were only shooting at us to keep us pinned down. That they were using stunners as well means they wanted her alive." He didn't know what was going on, but he was damn sure going to find out. Then he heard Sylen wrangle two of the 'thugs' from the police and told him to grab one, so he grabbed the nearest one to them, uncaring of who it was. They all knew something and he was going to find out what it was. The Black Steel never hurt anyone without a good reason, nor did they take any missions that sounded suspicious. So that didn't leave too many other reasons.
***************************
T'Sarrina nodded when Sylen told the officer they would get their prisoners back alive and in 'good' condition. Frankly, she didn't much care to go beyond the cursory bandaging of the mauled one, but she would check him out. He should at least be able to feed himself from now on, if nothing else. "I'll make sure they receive basic medical care." She assured them. She then watched as Sylen picked up the damaged one. "Let me make sure his arms won't be completely useless while you question the other one." She told him.
***************************
Jessan gave his statement about what happened, excluding telling them about her Theirin background or that one of them had called her that. Everything else was the truth though.
Once he finished, he sat with Sophie in his lap while Sylen spoke with the police about obtaining two of the 'thugs' for questioning.
"Desuko's never been in a fight, at least not a real one," Akraya murmured as her sister hugged Daxia out of sheer relief. "Schoolyard scraps, yes, but not this. For that matter, I didn't expect to destroy someone's shoulders today, either. These weren't just regular thugs, were they?" She gazed up at the pilot. "Why are they after the captain?"
***
Pedras stayed silent, keeping pace with the crew as they made their way back to the ship. He half expected more "thugs" to be waiting at Firestorm's landing pad, given what Jessan and Kellen had said. He got the feeling Jessan knew more than he'd been willing to say out in the open, but they'd find out soon enough.
"Good intuition." Daxia praised Akraya even as she watched both sisters carefully for signs of post-battle stress. "Given the amount of skill and planning involved its likely these so-called 'thugs' are probably mercenaries or professionally trained in service to a criminal organization. I believe that's why Sylen wanted two of them to interrogate." At this point Daxia glanced over at Sophie who was still being held by Jessan.
"As for what they want with the Captain, I don't know. Its possible she's made a few enemies along the way as a mercenary. I expect she'll tell us when she wakes up." It didn't matter to the Mikoatty what Sophie had done or who was after her-she was loyal to her Captain. That is unless she'd done something monstrous in the past, but it seemed unlikely. They'd have to wait and see.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sylen took the one who had been mauled and hoisted him across his own shoulders once T'Sarrina had bandaged him up. He was careful enough at least not to aggravate the injuries and undo his mate's work in bandaging them. Seeing as Kellen had grabbed another one, he bid farewell to the police and began leading the mercenaries back toward the spaceport. As they walked Sylen loosely wrapped the end of one of his longer tentacle around the end of T'Sarrina's. He glanced over at Desuko.

"Thank you for your assistance, I know you didn't have to do that and we're grateful. You'd best come with us to the Firestorm though for now for your own safety." He advised. "You might have made yourself a target of whomever tried to have the Captain abducted, but don't worry about it too much. I'll have Sylaise signal the Obsidian when we get back so you can be smuggled home safely." He assured her even as they approached Furst City's spaceport.

Once Sylen had hoisted the injured thug over his shoulder after T'Sarrina had bandaged his shoulders up, Jessan rose and picked up Sophie and walked inside with her. He did pause and thank Desuko for her her help and reiterate Sylen's suggestion. More than likely, Sophie's parents wouldn't be happy about losing her and just might try to retaliate if they knew who she was and that she helped.

He then took Sophie to their quarters and placed her on the bed so she could be comfortable when she woke up. He was sure she would call them all together once she did and tell them what was going on. He would, but it wasn't his place to do that. He'd promised her that he wouldn't.

******************************

T'Sarrina had carefully removed the bloody bandages that someone else had put on the mauled thug. She then gave him an injection to slow the bleeding down before she scanned him. No tendons were severed, so she rebandaged the wounds carefully. That was as much as she was willing to do for someone who was trying to kidnap Sophie, especially as he had been doing it for her parents. He would still be able to lift a fork, but that would be about it. Once she stood and nodded to Sylen, he picked up the thug and they made their way back to the airlock, holding tentacles. She was quite angry with these people, but she was furious with Sophie's parents. Why couldn't they just leave them alone?

*****************************

Kellen had his human thug by the collar of his leather jacket, and he half-dragged the reluctant prisoner towards the airlock. "We already know you're not simple gang members, so you better think about telling the truth when you're questioned, or you might not have a face left when I get through with you." He was that angry with them. Sophie hadn't ever harmed another person who wasn't trying to kill her first, and she never tried to hijack another mercenary's contract, so who was trying to kidnap her and why?

Desuko blinked at Sylen's offer. "I... didn't even consider that," she admitted. "Do you really think any of them will have escaped? I thought the police caught them all..."

A few months ago, Akraya would have reacted the same way, but after even such a short time with Black Steel, she knew better. "With a force that size, they wanted to make the point that they have more resources available. Half that number would have been sufficient, without the rest of the crew showing up. You're as much a target as any of Black Steel, and I don't doubt they'd go after you to try to blackmail the captain into surrendering. You should be safe on Kaltor, but until we can get you home, you're safer on the Firestorm."

Desuko nodded, offering Sylen her thanks, just a little scared now Akraya had spelled it out for her. Mutely, she followed her sister into the ship. As they passed the threshold, she mused, "Dad could sort this out."

"How?"

"Well, he's a lawyer. He could tie them up in legal proceedings-"

"Except that we don't know who they are," Pedras interjected. Neither sister had noticed his presence until that point. "I'm certain Kerrak is an excellent attorney, but he still needs facts to base his arguments on. That's the police's job - but we'll keep him in mind when they're done. Meanwhile, we need to keep you safe - I'll be sending a coded message to my sister and her family to lie low for a bit, too."

This time it was Akraya's turn to blimk. "Of course, they've failed to get to the captain; the next step could be the crew. And the easiest way to target us..."

"Is through family," Desuko finished. "At least, for those whose family can be traced - and I've not exactly kept my association with Black Steel secret."

"At this stage it's speculation," Pedras cautioned. "I'd rather give them an unnecessary warning than let them be targeted, though."

Djo and Crimson were trying to gather more information, both were using a mobile device to log on and look at the sleaze and dirt usually not visible on the official pages of the bounty boards but besides vague rumors nothing came up.

"We're on the wrong planet, the system here has been cleaned, the real grime I can't get at." Grumbled Crimson at no one specific.

Djo nodded.
"Can't reach old friends from here, would think someone cut off info at source."

"That means there's money and power involved." Crimson said, he opened his backpack and looked at the two SMG's inside.
"Guess we'll have to gear up and prepare for more troubles."

Once they reached the Firestorm, Sylen scanned the area and determined that their mysterious attackers weren't waiting at the spaceport. He felt much better once they had all gotten inside and the airlock had sealed shut behind them. He got on the intercom and ordered all of the secondary crewmembers to their stations and prepare the Firestorm for a quick takeoff if necessary. The sensor operator in particular had to use all the sensory capabilities the ship had to keep an eye on the immediate area and overhead in the skies.

Once he was satisfied all the precautions he could think of had been taken, Sylen turned to the primary crew gathered near the airlock. "I think the best thing to do is for us to go to the messhall where Djo can prepare us dinner." He decided. "Kellen and I wil detour to drop our 'guests' off at the brig then join you. Jessan I assume you'll want to take the Captain to your quarters to let her wake up?" He glanced at T'Sarrina.

"You can go check on her if you want. Its likely when she wakes up she'll want to hold a meeting in the messhall." He told her, which was why he'd ordered everyone there to begin with. He was as curious as they were about why Sophie had been attacked. With that in mind he nodded to Kellen and headed to the brig with their unconscious captives in tow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daxia nodded in response to Sylen as he issued his orders once they were safely back aboard the Firestorm. She had been a little surprised there weren't more attackers at the spaceport, though indeed it was a heavily guarded and monitored area. The Mikoatty authorities would want to have high security to prevent ship theft. Or maybe the thugs just didn't have the numbers to cover two places.
It didn't matter, they were safely inside now and Sylen was getting the secondary crew into position to react if more enemies arrived. When he ordered everyone but Kellen, Jessan and possibly T'Sarrina to the messhall she nodded and stroked Kellen's arm and wrist lovingly with her tail. "Don't be long." Daxia asked him before heading for the messhall with some of the others.
Jessan nodded at Sylen on his way to his and Sophie's quarters, especially after T'Sarrina gave her nod as well. When she was tucked in comfortably in the bed, he sat next her so he could be there when she woke. He only gave the two prisoners dark looks as he headed there. He hoped interrogation would be painful.
************************
"Yeah, let's put the trash up." Kellen then led his prisoner by the collar down to the brig, where he tossed him into a cell." Get comfy." He told him, then he locked the door behind him and headed for the messhall. He wanted to be there to hear what Sophie had to say, whether she knew anything about who was after her. And if she did, Kellen was going make them pay for targeting her.
************************
T'Sarrina gave Jessan a nod of approval just before he took Sophie off to sleep off the stunner. "She'll be okay, just a bit groggy and out of sorts when she wakes." She walked with Sylen as he carried his prisoner to the brig, not saying anything when Kellen tossed his inside a cell. She didn't care. Sophie and she didn't bother anyone, they just wanted to be left alone. And these guys were threatening that.
