A New Picture Thread

#1 Post by Chatty » September 5th, 2013, 1:56 pm

Since I'm too lazy to look up the other one, I'm starting a new one. I just finished two new hats, pattern called Braid-Edged Cap (for obvious reasons)

Here's me in the red one I finished just a few minutes ago:

And here's my adorable granddaughter Kadi modeling the blue one I finished the other day:

she has your eyes! :)
Are these caps crotcheted or knitted? I am not familiar with the stitch. Looks really good, though!!
This weekend I'll try to get on with my hand-sewn Dirndl (traditional Bavarian dress - mine will be much like the green one, third from the left in this picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diandlgwand.jpg , but mine will be from dark brown cloth with a cream-coloured apron and blouse). I also started on a very wide tatted lace that will get inserted in the Dirndel's blouse at the shoulders and around the neck.
I'll post a pic of the dress on Sunday evening (hopefully it'll be almost finished by then)

Aw, thank you. She loves modeling the stuff I make. I put it on her at church and she ran around with it on. Jen asked her if she thought it was too hot to be wearing a cap and she said "Yeah, but mommy, maw maw made it!"

The hat is knitted sideways and sewn together. If you're careful, the seam barely shows. The braid is knitted as you go. The pattern is here:

Oh, I want to see a picture of your Dirndl when it's done.

Look behind Garth, isn't it colorful? I've managed to figure out something pretty close to those big hexagons. Check it out:

I can detect no difference to the original. These are pretty! Particularly the rainbow coloured one is cool :) It's always fun (and a surprise) to see how multicoloured wool turns out in a project.

Is the quilt homemade as well? I like all the simple patterned ones :) You can get some amazing effects by chosing the right colours.
I'm planning to use my vacation in October to make a narrow quilt in the chinese coin pattern as a wall hanging along my bed (the wall is a bit chilly in winter and I always wake up when I happen to touch it with my toes or knees LOL). It's a good way to use up all those tiny bits of cloth I have left from other projects.
I'll put them on a dark background to make the colours look more brilliant. Ikea has a rather cheap black cotton - only 2 Euros ($3) per yard. This way the quilt will cost me next to nothing.
It'll look similar to this one:

I'm not using wool, as something this big will need to be machine washable, all the yarn will be acrylic. The rainbow hexagon is from Red Heart Super Saver, called Bikini (don't ask me why, I have no idea).

Machine washing/drying will make it nice and soft, though.

I've put a fifth (navy blue) hexagon on that row and am now starting the next row (which will have four hexagons). The four hexagons will be a burnt orange, white, red and light blue. Then I'll choose five colors for the next row up after they're done and attached.

There is no color-planning beyond rummaging through my yarn and finding a nice color in a ball big enough to make a hexagon with. I'll choose however many I need for the next row, then crochet and arrange them how I like them.

Got the next horizontal row attached. It's looking really good.

Oh, I don't know if the quilt is handmade or not. I was more focused on the afghan.

Now to find five more colors to work the next row in.

This is going to be an awesome afghan! Your stitches are so regular! Mine always get a little bumpy when I take a pause and reseume the work.

Thank you. I've almost got the third horizontal row done. I've just been making motifs for now since I'm not sure which ones I want to put on it to finish. The yarn is not all from the same company, but It's all about the same weight.

My gauge is running between 8" and 8-1/4" per motif, so there hasn't been any problems sewing them together.

I don't have any homemade hats or afghans, but I'm sure have some pictures that I can post tonight.

Ah, good. I won't be hogging the thread too much with pictures :D

Here's another in the same hexagon pattern, only it's bigger:

That's almost 100g of baby yarn using a 4.0mm hook.

I intend to keep going with it and make a big hex afghan/throw out of it.

I changed my mind somewhat on the last throw. I ended off the big hex and am going to make four more just like it, along with two half-hexes and put them together.

This diagram should give you an idea of how both throws will look:

I know it's black and white, it's just a diagram of how the motifs will be arranged. It isn't to scale either, I just did that up quickly in MSPaint.

James Hallam - though only friends of friends can search for me, so I went ahead and sent a request. ;)

I made the album public. It's easier than deciding which photos are best to put on here. :)

Gotten a bit farther on the giant hex throw. I have two more giant motifs to crochet for the other end, then two half-hexes for the sides.
