Hargil's Bar And Grill (Not a tax dodge or Mafia joint)

Even wilder and wackier than pre-crash Miscellaneous, the survivors talk about the weather, puppies, work, and coffee.

^^ Exactly. All that is written into the BBCode, so all you need is the specific video string. And by the way, it's perfectly okay to Post your Aussie songs-- we've had "extra guests" before.

Okay then!

<tap tap> Is this thing on?

Welcome to the alternate stage at Hargil's! I'm your MC, Australis, bringing you some of what's get about Aussie Rock!

It's not British and it's not American. Have you heard 'Friday On My Mind' by the Easybeats? Then you've heard Aussie Rock! And of course you've heard AC/DC!

So let's get a few guys up here you might not have heard.

Starting off with Daddy Cool. Back in the day (1970-71), Sons of the Vegetable Mother were a serious band with serious music, which was another way of saying poor. So they alternated as a party band. It wasn't too long before they realised the party band made much more money than the serious one.

This was their first single, and is regarded as an icon of Aussie Rock! The great, the legendary...

A big hand there for Ross Wilson and the boys!

In the States it's bar bands. In Australia it's pub bands. One of the best Aussie pub bands was the Angels. They rocked hard and rocked well. And this song live was a huge experience, so turn it up loud! :D

So here's Doc Neeson and the guys...

Thanks, Doc! Hey what do you take to get in that state?!

Now, here's a gem Australia in the late 60s and early 70s had a big prog rock scene (I may include Madder Lake's 12 Lb Toothbrush later as a more commercial example). And Fraternity was one of those groups that attracted the best musicians of the day, not guys you may have heard of but cutting edge.

Anyway, here's one of their better known songs.

And see that guy, the beardy weirdy playing the flute? You may be surprised to find out who he is!

Another Iconic song that many, myself included, think defines Australia in a rock context. It's also one of Terry Pratchett's favourite songs, and the lyrics permeate the Discworld book 'The Last Continent' (trust me it makes sense :) ).

Okay, that'll do for now, I'll hand you back to the main stage and your host! :D

^^ I remember those guys, from back in the 80s. Midnight Oil. Scary bald guy as lead singer. :Ahhh:

Thanks very much to DJ Jazzy Australis for bringing in his parade of Aussie music. All worthy stuff and, surprisingly, none of it would have been out of place in the US. They all would have fit in quite nicely here in their respective eras. I especially liked the first one, from the 60s, but that Arena Rock number from the 70s was pretty snazzy, too.

I'm guessing it's one of the Tellerites from "Journey To Babel." Or is it you? ;)

And now here is ABBA again, with another classic hit:

The beardy weirdy with the flute in the Fraternity clip?

Bon Scott, AC/DC

As for Midnight Oil, the bald, gangly lead singer with the weird dance moves... is Peter Garrett, now a Federal Government minister. :)

And speaking of da Oils...

Midnight Oil! That's that name I was looking for. I'd only hear two of their songs before "Beds are Burning" and another I can't remember the name of. The music video was filmed by Uluru.

So over on the alternate stage, let's throw in a few Aussie songs.

GANGgajang had a couple of hits, this is one. Listen to the lyrics, they capture Australia well.
[youtube]ML9h3I5Uktw[/youtube]

A really atmospheric song from Australian Crawl:
[youtube]JIrUqsB-0vw[/youtube]

Might add a few more from them later.

And finally (for now) Noiseworks, with one of their better songs:
[youtube]H1QS-Cscj00[/youtube]
"... times change, and so must I… we all change. When you think about it, we are all different people, all through our lives and that’s okay, that’s good! You've gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be."

Thank you for that great show, ABBA. We have a free table for you reserved by the kitchen. And always remember, "Able was I, ere I saw ABBA." Haha. Thank you. Try the Swedish Meatballs.

And now everybody please welcome that cantankerous, antisocial, New Wave icon of the early 80s, the one and only Elvis Costello! Image

And now, over on the alternate stage something REALLY different.

A well known song, as done by an Australian bluegrass band:

[youtube]lf4__-xWq8w[/youtube]
"... times change, and so must I… we all change. When you think about it, we are all different people, all through our lives and that’s okay, that’s good! You've gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be."

Fair enough, but it's a clever version, and the dancing girls go from boot scooting to the moves from the SL video clip.
